Description of the route

1. CAVO - PORTO AZZURRO Our hike will begin from Cavo, the eastern tip of Elba Island, gradually ascending toward Monte Grosso, Monte Strega, and Cima del Monte, the highest peak of the day at 516 meters. We'll hike across red jasper, which will provide us with all the energy and vitality we need to tackle this challenging yet enjoyable climb to the picturesque Valle delle Fiche, amidst the scents and colors of the Mediterranean scrub, orchids, vineyards, and olive groves. The trail offers ever-changing views: to the east, the view opens onto the islets of Palmaiola, Cerboli, and Isola dei Topi, the Tuscan coast, and the Elban villages of Rio Marina and Rio Elba; to the north, the bays of Bagnaia and Nisporto are visible. To the west, imposing Mount Capanne dominates, with Corsica and the island of Capraia on the horizon, the only volcanic island in the Tuscan Archipelago. In the afternoon, we'll begin the descent, which will lead us to the village of Porto Azzurro, a former Spanish dominion. Characterized by charming internal streets and a splendid square overlooking the sea, it's the perfect conclusion to an excursion rich in panoramas, nature, and history. 18 km, 900 m elevation gain (alternative: 23 km, 1,050 m elevation gain) 2. PORTO AZZURRO - MARINA DI CAMPO From the main road near Porto Azzurro, we'll climb a steep slope that will lead us to the summit of Mount Orello, immersed in the scents of cistus, broom, and rosemary. Once at the summit, the panorama opens up spectacularly: to the north, the Gulf of Portoferraio, to the south, Lacona and the promontory of Capo Stella. We'll then continue among the holm oaks of Colle Reciso, along an ancient military road, where we'll encounter fascinating relics of the past, such as a lime kiln and an ancient windmill, silent guardians of the island's rural history. We'll cross Elba's ridge, a more relaxing stretch with smoother terrain, before reaching Monte Tambone, the highest and most challenging point of the day, offering sweeping and evocative 360° views. From here, the scenery changes again: the view opens onto the bright and sunny southern coast, accompanying us on the final descent to Marina di Campo, the longest sandy beach on Elba. An intense and rewarding hike, combining nature, history, and sweeping views, crossing the island from east to south. 19 km, 590 m elevation gain 3. MARINA DI CAMPO –
